U.S. FUNDS RECONSTRUCTION OF THE BORDER GUARD TRAINING ACADEMY IN DUSHANBE
On June 10 the head of the Border Guards General Sherali Mirzo, Ambassador Jacobson, and Turkish Ambassador Mir Akif Ayhan officially broke ground for renovations at the Border Guard training campus. This is a USG funded $2.5 million project which will include reconstruction of the facility and provision of basic furniture and training equipment.

PRESIDENT OBAMA’S SPEECH IN CAIRO: A NEW BEGINNING
Tajik journalists, political analysts, students, and academics joined Ambassador Jacobson at the embassy to watch President Obama deliver his “A New Beginning” speech live from Cairo on June 4. They praised the President for his efforts to pursue peace with Muslims worldwide, while noting the difficulty of the long process ahead.

BRENDA FLANAGAN SPINS MESMERIZING TALES FROM THE CARIBBEAN
Dr. Brenda Flanagan of Davidson College, North Carolina, spent a week in Tajikistan discussing civil rights in the United States and performing dramatic readings of her stories about life among the poor. Flanagan shared personal history about the prejudice she endured, and noted significant milestones in the history of civil rights.

PIANIST DAVID KOREVAAR PERFORMS DURING INTERNATIONAL PIANO FESTIVAL
Boulder, Colorado-based pianist David Korevaar performed before a packed house at the Tajik Conservatory on May 15. Korevaar’s performance was part of the International Piano Festival, which featured pianists from Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and the United States.
