USAID Celebrates 15th Anniversary of Partnership with Tajikistan

Over 150 representatives of the Government of Tajikistan, donor community, local and international businesses, media and civil society organizations gathered in Dushanbe to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID)’s work in Tajikistan. U.S. Ambassador Tracey Ann Jacobson, USAID Regional Director William Frej and State Advisor of the President of Tajikistan on Economic Affairs Matlubkhon Davlatov opened the event.

Boulder Mayor Shaun McGrath and a delegation from the Boulder Dushanbe Sister Cities organization presented the Friendship Cafe, their gift to the city of Dushanbe, on September 23, 2008. Boulder residents raised $1 million in funding to build the cafe for Tajikistan, as a reciprocal gesture for Tajikistan’s Dushanbe Teahouse, which opened in 1998 in Boulder.

U.S. Ambassador Jacobson visits a cultural preservation site in Shahrituz

U.S. Ambasador Tracey Ann Jacobson visited the Khoja Mashad Madrassa and Mausoleum in southern Shahrituz District of Tajikistan.  Over $106,000 has been allocated for its renovation under the Ambassador's Fund for Cultural Preservation program to ensure that one of the oldest madrassas in Central Asia is accessible for future generations.

United States Secretary of Commerce Carlos M. Gutierrez, Tajik President Emomali Rahmon and Afghan President Hamid Karzai opened the U.S. Government funded Tajik-Afghan Bridge over the Pyanj River.  The brdige is the largest U.S. Government funded infrastructure project for Tajikistan.  Its cost is $37.1 million.
