Brenda Flanagan Spins Mesmerizing Tales from the Caribbean

Dushanbe, May 26.  Dr. Brenda Flanagan of Davidson College, North Carolina, spent a week in Tajikistan discussing civil rights in the United States and performing dramatic readings of her stories about life among the poor in Cuba, Brazil, and Hawaii.  In Dushanbe, Khujand, and Qurghon-Teppa, Flanagan shared personal history about the prejudice she endured, and noted significant milestones in the history of civil rights.   While acknowledging the significance of the election of President Obama, she said civil rights advocacy should continue against “institutionalized racism” that still affects U.S. citizens today.
