At September 5 grant award ceremony, Charge d’Affaires Necia Quast recognized seven civil society leaders from Dushanbe and the Khatlon Region who received funding through the embassy's Democracy Commission Small Grant Program.  Twenty-five grants totaling $200,000 were awarded to NGO leaders in 2008 within the framework of this program to support community building and democracy projects.  The Democracy Commission Small Grants Program was established in Tajikistan in 2001 and to date the embassy has issued 200 grants totaling $1,220,000.
