AWARDS CEREMONY FOR THE WINNERS OF THE DRUG DEMAND REDUCTION CHAMPIONSHIP

Dushanbe, Tajikistan, October 25, 2009.  Today the Chief of the International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Office of the U.S. Embassy in Tajikistan, Anne Carson, President of the Bodybuilding and Fitness federation of Tajikistan, Toleh Kholnazarov and Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Youth, Sports and Tourism, Mirzoev awarded prizes to the winners of the body building championship dedicated to drug demand reduction and promoting a healthy lifestyle among young people in Tajikistan.  The championship was conducted by the Body Building and Fitness Federation of Tajikistan and sponsored by the Drug Demand Reduction Project of the International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Section of the United States Embassy in Tajikistan. 

A total of thirty young people from all regions of Tajikistan, ages 20-38 participated in the 3-day tournament in Dushanbe.  The third day of the tournament marked the completion of the competition, and twelve winners were awarded prizes.  The final day of the competition featured musical performances by local artists and demonstrational sport activities by the winners of the competition.

The U.S. Embassy’s International Narcotics and Law Enforcement program has provided more than $37.5 million in assistance to support Tajikistan’s security, rule of law, police, and counter narcotics efforts since 1992.
