Dushanbe Warden Message - MARCH 14, 2006

On Sunday, March 12, a violent criminal incident against an American citizen took place at Dushanbe’s Victory Park.  Though there is no evidence at this time that Americans are being specifically targeted for violent crime, the U.S. Embassy advises American citizens resident and traveling in Tajikistan to exercise caution and avoid traveling alone when possible, especially in remote or uncrowded areas.  Thefts and muggings always have the potential to be violent.

Americans are urged to consult Tajikistan’s Consular Information Sheet, updated December 2, 2005, for specifics on safety, security, and crime in Tajikistan and for embassy contact information.  This document is available at:  <http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_1037.html>.
For the latest security information, Americans traveling abroad should regularly monitor the Department’s Internet web site at <http://travel.state.gov/index.html> where the current Travel Warnings and Public Announcements <http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis_pa_tw_1168.html>, including the Worldwide Caution Public Announcement <http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/pa/pa_1161.html>, can be found.
Up-to-date information on safety and security can also be obtained by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll free in the U.S., or for callers outside the U.S. and Canada, a regular toll-line at 1-202-501-4444.  These numbers are available from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday (except U.S. federal holidays).
The Department of State urges American citizens to take responsibility for their own personal security while traveling overseas.  For general information about appropriate measures travelers can take to protect themselves in an overseas environment, see the Department of State’s pamphlet A Safe Trip Abroad <http://travel.state.gov/travel/tips/safety/safety_1747.html>.
